Race Recap: Hollywood Casino 400

23 Oct

Okay, full disclosure: I didn’t watch this past weekend’s race.  I rented “The Hunger Games” instead, and it was pretty awesome.  Best 74 cents I’ve ever spent (thank you, Redbox!!!).

I just got caught up on the race highlights, however, thanks to NASCAR‘s wonderfully produced “Race Rewind” (which as I’ve mentioned before, is a must-watch any time you miss a race).

Here’s the tweet that sent me to the Race Rewind for the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas, by the way (so I knew right off the bat that Matt Kenseth won):

…and here is the NASCAR.com recap of the race.

Some thoughts on the race (or more accurately, some thoughts on the Race Rewind for Kansas):

  • Did you hear the announcer say (Race Rewind, Lap 32) that they were expecting “maybe half a dozen” cautions? HA! (There were a track-record 14 on Sunday).
  • Everyone knows that Tony Stewart is a psycho, right?  RIGHT???  (See Race Rewind, Lap 74: “Feel free, at any point guys, to get your heads out of your @$$es.”)
  • Check out the Race Rewind at Lap 147 after Brad Keselowski almost hits the wall.  The dash cam has a perfectly placed Dodge logo that looks suspiciously computer-generated.  Here it is:

Check out that Dodge logo. Looks Photoshop’d.

Here’s a question:

  • When Greg Biffle hits the wall and slides across the grass into Pit Lane (Lap 174), he was allowed to go straight to his pit box without entering Pit Lane at the beginning???

Greg Biffle takes a shortcut to his pit box on Lap 174.

EarlyTweet of the Week” candidates:

So, another week of the Chase down, and the Top 3 remain the same: (1) Brad Keselowski, (2) Jimmie Johnson, and (3) Denny Hamlin.

Everyone else better start making moves or one of these three will win the championship this season.

Next Sunday, the Chase for the Sprint Cup moves to Ridgeway, Virginia, for the TUMS Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway a.k.a. “The Paperclip.”

Now… we’ve already had a “Fast Relief” race name this season (The Goody’s Fast Relief 500, also at Martinsville), so couldn’t we have been a little more original, Tums??

Race Recap: Goody’s Fast Relief 500

2 Apr

Once again yesterday, we saw the importance of luck in NASCAR.

After watching Jeff Gordon (#24) and Jimmie Johnson (#48) run in first or second place for much of the day, a wild overtime restart led to a wreck that pushed both the 24 and 48 cars outside the top 10 on the day, and helped Ryan Newman (#39) win his first race of the year in the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville.

The 39 car of Ryan Newman takes the checkered flag at Martinsville.

Here is the video of the first overtime restart and subsequent wreck.

The most amazing thing about this video – to me, at least – is the incredible difference it made having fresh tires for the restart.

Watch the video again, paying close attention to the 15 car of Clint Bowyer and the 39 car of Newman. Those teams chose to pit during the previous caution, while the 24 and 48 teams decided to stay out.  The 15 and the 39 zoom forward at the restart, bumping into the 24 and 48 cars and helping to cause the wreck in Turn 1, which led to another caution.

At the next restart, Newman took the checkered flag, and won this awesome prize:

The grandfather clock: a timeless gift.

A lot of the talk on Twitter after the race conveyed some anger or frustration with Bowyer (#15) and David Reutimann (#10), whose stalled car on the track at the end of regulation led to the caution flag which caused the green-white-checkered finish.

(Note: the #Team24 hashtag means Gordon’s crew composed that tweet, not Gordon himself).

But the tweet of the night (in terms of humor) has to go to Matt Kenseth, who was clearly content with his 4th place finish:

Some drivers were more upset than others, as you can tell, but luckily they all have two weeks to cool off before the next race.

NASCAR being the Christian sport that it is, it should come as no surprise that there is no race scheduled on Easter weekend. (It’s the only weekend off all season, in fact).

See you in two weeks!

New NASCAR knowledge picked up this weekend:

  • The Martinsville Speedway is nicknamed “The Paperclip” because of its symmetrical, oval shape.
  • The brakes on the cars at Martinsville ran each team roughly $40,000. Woof!

Race Preview: Goody’s Fast Relief 500

31 Mar

The Sprint Cup Series shifts back east to the hot-bed of NASCAR this weekend with the Goody’s Fast Relief 500.

These race names continue to get weirder and weirder… and the NASCAR stereotypes continue to prove true. (Or maybe not… I just discovered that “Goody’s Fast Relief” has nothing to do with flatulence. It’s pain relief.)

This week, the “500” in the name refers to the number of laps in the race. Last week, the number in the race name stood for the number of miles. (It’s confusing, I know).

The Goody’s Fast Relief 500 is race #6 (out of 36) on the Sprint Cup circuit. Race coverage on Sunday starts at 12:30 PM on FOX.

Below the logo, find everything you need to prepare for this weekend’s race.
